Poker

The 2019 Global Poker Awards turned out to be a nigh filled with admiration and startling revelations thanks to one player.

After announcing this year’s nominees back in March, the newly amalgamated awards ceremony went down on April 5.

Taking place inside the PokerGo Studios in Las Vegas, the showcase saw some of poker’s biggest names take home a gong.

Worthy Winners Collect Global Poker Awards

John Cynn scooped the Tournament Performance of the Year award for his 2018 WSOP Main Event win, while Almedin Imsirovic was lauded as the game’s hottest prospect.

Other pros stepping into the spotlight at the 2019 Global Poker Awards were:

  • Lifetime Achievement in Poker: Doyle Brunson
  • PocketFives Legacy Award: Chris Moorman
  • 2018 GPI Poker Player of the Year: Alex Foxen
  • Stream of the Year: Lex Veldhuis
  • Broadcaster of the Year: Maria Ho

While all were worth winners on the night, controversy marked the buildup to the event. After the list of nominees went live, Doug Polk and Brad Owen made their discontent known.

Polk baulked at being nominated for Vlogger of the Year since he’d not produced a vlog in 2018.

Hey @gpi what in the fuck do I have to do to get nominated for this 'Vlogger of the Year' category? Probably wouldn't be upset if there weren't people nominated who don't even make poker vlogs: https://t.co/c97CNSmfTW

Similarly, Owen was incensed he’d not made the shortlist, despite being one of the game’s most active vloggers.

Owen Gets Personal During Ceremony

Despite being overlooked, Owens did find his way to the podium. With fans given a chance to vote, the American scooped the People’s Choice Award for Poker Personality of the Year.

Not one to waste an opportunity, the man with 100,000+ YouTube subscribers used the moment to dispel some ugly rumors. Making light of his status as a social media figure, he let the haters know he’s not a virgin (see video below).

Ever the entertainer, Owen stole the show with his acceptance speech. However, in among poking fun at himself and the industry, he did offer a sincere thanks to the fans and the Global Poker Awards.

The event itself proved to be a success. Streamed around the world via PokerGo, the ceremony proved that poker is slowly becoming more like a sport.

Although the industry may pale in comparison to football and the like, it’s more mature than it once was. Indeed, with top players and personalities given an opportunity to shine, the future remains bright for poker in the US and the world at large.
